How to Nourish Damaged Curly Hair with 4 Best Deep Conditioners and Masks

Everyone wants healthy, manageable hair that looks and feels good. But how can you care for your curly hair to keep it hydrated and in the best condition? That’s where deep conditioners come in! Deep conditioners are super-concentrated hair treatments that penetrate into the hair shaft. Deep treatments provide extra conditioning, hydration, and protection from damage caused by hot styling tools and extreme weather conditions.

Since I’ve been working with Sephora, I’ve had the opportunity to test out plenty of different hair, beauty, and skincare products that make me feel better about myself and my hair. I’m also more conscious about sulfate, silicon & paraben-free products now, and I want to incorporate more chemical-free and natural products into my hair care regimen.

If you want your curls to be healthy and bouncy, you need a hydrating deep conditioner for curly hair. Whether you’re looking for something to nurture thinning hair or give intense moisture to brittle hair, there is a deep conditioner out there for you.

What Does a Deep Conditioner Do?

A deep conditioner works to replenish moisture, repair damage, and strengthen the hair cuticle. It does this by applying proteins and fatty acids to help smooth out the hair’s surface while providing intense hydration. When used regularly and consistently, it improves the overall elasticity of your strands which makes them less prone to breakage. Plus, as an added bonus most deep conditioners contain essential vitamins and minerals like biotin and vitamin E that promote scalp health as well as shine and body.

How long should I leave deep conditioning treatment in my hair?

How long you keep your deep conditioner on can really depend on what kind of situation we’re dealing with here. Moisture-based products are like the party animals of the beauty world – they can swing for anything from 5 to 30 minutes, or even be allowed to run wild and go overnight if you’re feeling particularly daring. But when it comes to protein-based conditioners, it’s best not to go way past the bellowed 3 AM of product usage. Uf you leave them in too long they can start having negative effects on your hair fibers. So make sure to always consult the packaging directions given; after all, it was put there for a reason!

One of my favorite things to do in life is to wash my hair– seriously, I love to wash my hair! Something that I don’t like as much is deep conditioning; it’s just hard for me to find the time to really sit back, relax, and take 10-30 minutes out of my day solely just to “deep condition” my hair.

I’ve changed my mind, my attitude, and my approach towards deep conditioning because now, I’m all about self-care. I really had to reframe my thinking and say to myself, “taking a little bit of extra time to care for yourself is actually a good thing, Tiff!” I like deep treatments that don’t require much time and are fast-acting with lasting results.

The Protein Overload No-No

It’s all too easy to get carried away with anti-breakage products, thinking that each additional one makes your hair better. Think twice before slathering on more protein-packed deep conditioners—it could have the opposite effect and leave your hair feeling brittle and dry. While it’s great to look for products and treatments that are made to strengthen, restore and repair strands, you have to be cautious when it comes to protein levels. Loading up on those protein treatments can backfire—leaving your hair damaged and fragile instead of silky smooth.

Protein buildup is no laughing matter—your strands could go from bad to worse if you’re not careful.  The takeaway? Just because a product has the words “strengthening” and “repairing” emblazoned everywhere on the label doesn’t mean it’s right for you — read the ingredients list carefully! After all, you want softness over stiffness, suppleness over breakage…or else you could be in for quite a shock.

How often Should You Use a Deep Conditioner?

The frequency with which you use a deep conditioner will depend on your individual hair type and needs. Generally speaking though, people with coily or kinky textures should use a deep conditioner twice or three times weekly; those with wavy or curly textures should use one once or twice per week; and those with straight or fine textures should use it no more than once weekly. The coarser or curlier, the more often you should deep condition. However, if you find that you need more frequent conditioning for dryness or damage then by all means increase your usage accordingly!

After deep conditioning, make sure to apply some nurturing styling products. To keep your curls healthy and shiny, incorporate one of my favorite oils or serums in your daily or weekly curly hair routine. Using an oil in addition to deep treatments or hair masks, moisturizes and prevents split ends and hair breakage. Using a hair serum protects the hair against heat damage when using hot tools and can improve the health of your hair in the long run.

Using this hair treatment is fast and does not require much effort. Simply condition with the Raw Shea Butter Deep Moisturizing Conditioner, apply generously and comb it through. Let it sit for five minutes and rinse thoroughly!

Who should use deep containers?

Regardless of your hair type or texture, incorporating a deep conditioner into your routine is key for achieving healthy tresses! Regularly using a deep conditioning treatment helps restore moisture balance while also providing protection from heat styling tools. Additionally, many formulas contain nourishing ingredients like biotin, vitamins A & E, shea butter and more. These ingredients help promote scalp health while also increasing shine and body of the hair. So if you’re looking for beautiful coils free of split ends then it may be time to invest in some quality deep conditioning treatments!

There’s no single, one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing the right deep conditioner for every hair type. Hair that has been chemically altered, such as colour treated, highlighted or straightened curls, or for those with coarse, curly or tightly coiled hair usually requires a rich formula. But if you have fine hair or low porosity strands that tend to weigh down easily by heavy ingredients, use lightweight deep conditioners. Lightweight masks with minimal oil and butter, like Bumble and Bumble Thickening Plumping Mask, won’t leave your hair flat or greasy and feeling overloaded. Remember: generally, the thinner the formula, the lighter it tends to be! Who says beauty isn’t all about compromise?

Extra Tips:

All hair types can benefit from a little TLC in the form of deep conditioners, but if you want to get the most out of it, watch out for the formulation. If you have chemically-treated hair or are rocking curls or coils, then opt for an intense moisturizing heavy-hitter.

If you’re trying to figure out what your hair needs, here’s a useful guide: if you’ve been through the wringer with your curls, from bleach to flat irons, then chances are it’s damaged. On the other hand, if your hair just feels dry and unhappy (without any treatments involved) then revive it with some protein-free deep conditioning. But if damage is on the horizon, it might be time to get a deep conditioner with fortifying proteins to seal that cuticle and give it extra strength. So don’t be left scratching your head in confusion – figure out what your hair needs today!

Give these Deep Treatments a try!

If you have curly hair that needs extra love and attention these four deep conditioners can transform your tresses overnight! With options ranging from volumizing masks all the way up to intense moisturizers there’s sure to be one that fits all of your needs perfectly! So go ahead – try one (or all) of these deep conditioners today. They can bring life back into even the most damaged strands! You won’t regret it – promise!
